Imam Hasan - The leader of the young men of Jannah

Imam Hasan (May Allah be well pleased with him), the grandson of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi w sallam), the leader of young men of Jannah, the chief of the pious, whose blessed name is “Hasan” and whose Kunniyah is Abu Muhammad (May Allah be well pleased with him).

His birth

Imam Jalaluddin Suyuti (May Allah be well pleased with him) has written in “Tarikh Ul Khulafa” that Imam Hasan (May Allah be well pleased with him) was born on 15th Ramadhan, 3 Hijri.  (Tarikh UL Khulafa, Vol. 1, Pg. No. 76)

His blessed name

As per the Hadith in Mo’jam Kabeer Tabarani, Hadhrat Ali (May Allah be well pleased with him) had named Imam Hasan as Hamza and Imam Hussain as Jafar, but the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) kept their names as Hasan and Hussain.  (Mo’jam Kabeer Tabarani, Hadith No. 2713)

Hasan and Hussain (May Allah be well pleased with them) are both heavenly names

Hasan and Hussain are both heavenly names and before Islam, the Arabs had not used these names.  As given As Sawaaiqul Muhriqa, Pg. No. 115 and Tarikh Ul Khulafa, Vol. 1, Pg. No. 115.

When Imam Hasan (May Allah be well pleased with him) was born, the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said the Adhaan in his ears, as given in Mo’jam Kabeer Tabarani, Hadith No. 2515.

As given in Sunan Abu Dawood, Pg. No. 392, Hadith No. 2843, the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) slaughtered a goat each in the Aqqeqa of the Imams Hasan and Hussain (May Allah be well pleased with them).

His beauty

It is given in Sahih Bukhari on the authority of Hadhrat Anas bin Malik (May Allah be well pleased with him) that no one resembled the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) more than Imam Hasan (May Allah be well pleased with him). (Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No. 3752)

The Prophet’s special grant

As per the Hadith in Mo’jam Kabeer Tabarani, Hadhrat Fatima (May Allah be well pleased with her) took both the princes to the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) in His final illness and asked Him to give them something special from His inheritance.  The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said: Hasan is the inheritor of my resemblance and leadership and Hussain is the inheritor of my fearlessness and courage.  (Mo’jam Kabeer Tabarani, Hadith No. 18474)

There is a Hadith in Sahih Bukhari and Jame’ Tirmidhi that the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) graced the pulpit.  Imam Hasan (May Allah be well pleased with him) was beside Him.  The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) would turn to the people some and turn to Imam Hasan (May Allah be well pleased with him) some.  He (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said: This son of mine is a leader.  Indeed! Through him, Allah Ta’ala will affect a truce between 2 great groups of Muslims.  (Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No. 2704; Jame’ Tirmidhi, Hadith No. 4142)

The Imams are the beauty and adornment of Jannah

There is a Hadith in Mo’jam Ausat and Kanz Ul Ummal that after everyone who has to enter Jannah will enter Jannah, then the Jannah will remind Allah Ta’ala of His promise to adorn her.  Then Allah Ta’ala will tell Jannah that He has given Imams Hasan and Hussain (May Allah be well pleased with them) to her.  On this Jannah will pride herself like a bride.  (Mo’jam Ausat, Hadith No. 343; Jame Ul Ahadith, Hadith No. 1331; Jame Ul Kabeer, Hadith No. 1342; Majma Uz Zawaaid, Hadith No. 15096; Kanz Ul Ummal, Hadith No. 34290)

Reward of loving the Ahle Bait of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam)

Translation of Hadith: It has been narrated on the authority of Hadhrat Ali (May Allah be well pleased with him): The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said: The first people to enter Jannah (along with you) will be Hadhrat Fatima, Imam Hasan and Imam Hussain (May Allah be well pleased with them).  I asked: What about those who love us?  The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) answered:  They will be behind you.  (Mustadrak Alas Sahihain, Hadith No. 4706)

There is another Hadith in Sunan Ibn Majah:

Translation of Hadith: It has been narrated on the authority of Hadhrat Abu Hurairah (May Allah be well pleased with him) that the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said: Whoever loves Hasan and Hussain (May Allah be well pleased with them), in fact loves me and whoever has enmity against them has in fact enmity against me.  (Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith No. 148)

His generosity

Once, Imam Hasan, Imam Hussain and Hadhrat Abdullah Bin Jafar (May Allah be well pleased with them) were going to Makkah for Haj.  On the way, they found the hut of an old woman.  They went there and requested the old woman to get something to drink.  The old woman gave them goat’s milk.  Then they asked for something to eat.  The old woman told that she had only a goat and nothing else.  Subsequently, that goat was slaughtered and everyone partook from it.  They told the old woman: We are from the Quraish.  You come to Madina, we will give you something.

After they went away, the woman’s husband came and expressed his displeasure at slaughtering the only goat form absolute strangers.

After a time, the old woman and her husband became very poor and came to Madina and started living as laborers.  By chance, the woman passed the house of Imam Hasan (May Allah be well pleased with him).  She did not recognize him.  Imam Hasan (May Allah be well pleased with him) recognized her and called out to her: O old woman! DO you recognize me?  She said: No.  Imam Hasan (May Allah be well pleased with him) said: I am that guest of yours who you had served goat’s milk and mutton.  Then Imam Hasan (May Allah be well pleased with him) gave her 1000 goats and 1000 gold coins and sent her to Imam Hussain (May Allah be well pleased with him).  He also gave her 1000 goats and 1000 coins and sent her to Hadhrat Abdullah Bin Jafar (May Allah be well pleased with him).  He gave her 2000 goats and 2000 gold coins.  The old woman returned rich to her husband with 4000 goats and 4000 gold coins.  (Shahadatnama, Pg. No. 19 Hadhrat Muhaddith-E-Deccan (May Allah shower His mercy on him))

His fear of Allah

A boy was seen in Makkah.  He would rub his forehead on the sand and cry.  He was oblivious to everything else in his desire for Allah Ta’ala.  When people went closer, they realized that the boy was Imam Hasan (May Allah be well pleased with him).  They told him: Your grandfather (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) is the intercessor of the Mahshar, your father is so great, your mother is Fatima (May Allah be well pleased with them), what fear do you have?

He said: This is not the place to pride oneself on the greatness of the parents.  Here, we should be desirous of the benevolence of Allah Ta’ala.  (Shahadatnama, Pg. No. no 91)

His miracles

Once Hadhrat Imam Hasan (May Allah be well pleased with him) was journeying along with some people.  They reached a date palm, which was all dried up.  The people expressed their desire to have dates.  Imam Hasan (May Allah be well pleased with him) said: Do you desire dates?  They replied in the affirmative.  Imam Hasan (May Allah be well pleased with him) raised his hands and said something.  The tree became green and dates appeared.  (Shahadatnama, Pg. No. 93)

His martyrdom

He was martyred by poisoning on 5 Rabe’e Ul Awwal in either 50 or 49 Hijri in Madina.  His blessed grave is in Madina Munawwarah. (Tarikh Ul Khulafa, Vol., 1, Pg. No. 78)
