Some miracles of Hadhrat 'Umar (May Allah be well pleased with him)

 Some miracles of Hadhrat ‘Umar

(May Allah be well pleased with him)

For the sake of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam), Almighty Allah had granted the knowledge of hidden things to Hadhrat ‘Umar (May Allah be well pleased with him).  Thus, Abu Muslim Khoulani (May Allah be well pleased with him) was asked by Asab bin Qais to accept him as the Prophet.  He refused.  He stoked a fire and put Hadhrat Abu Muslim (May Allah be well pleased with him) into it.  The fire cooled down for him.  Asad bin Qais banished him from the city.  When he reached Madina, Hadhrat ‘Umar (May Allah be well pleased with him) embraced him and said:  Praise be to Allah for saving you from fire.  However, no one had conveyed this information to him.  This was nothing but the blessings of the knowledge of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam).

In the caliphate of Hadhrat ‘Umar (May Allah be well pleased with him), Hadhrat ‘Ali (May Allah be well pleased with him) saw a dream that he woke up when there was very less time left for Salaat Ul Fajr.  He reached Masjid Nabawi and found the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) seated there.  The Prophet told him:  Offer Salaat quickly.  Time for Fajr is short.  After offering Salaat, when Hadhrat ‘Ali (May Allah be well pleased with him) presented himself to the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam), He granted him a date out of a tray that was placed before him.

When Hadhrat ‘Ali (May Allah be well pleased with him) woke up, the time for Fajr was indeed short.  He reached the mosque and saw Hadhrat ‘Umar (May Allah be well pleased with him) seated there.  He advised him:  Offer Salaat quickly.  Time for Fajr is short.  After Salaat, Hadhrat ‘Ali (May Allah be well pleased with him) saw that a tray of dates was placed before Hadhrat ‘Umar (May Allah be well pleased with him).  He gave 1 date to Hadhrat ‘Ali (May Allah be well pleased with him).  When Hadhrat ‘Ali (May Allah be well pleased with him) desired to take one more, Hadhrat ‘Umar (May Allah be well pleased with him) said:  The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) had granted you only one.  (Mirqaat Sharh Mishkaat)

A women’s oil had spilled and she was standing crying.  The earth had absorbed all the oil.  Hadhrat ‘Umar (May Allah be well pleased with him) passed by and inquired the reason for her crying.  Then, he took out his whip and started whipping the spot where the oil had spilled.  He would say:  O earth!  You have embezzled her oil in my caliphate!  Return it!  The earth regurgitated the oil and the women filled her vessel with it.  (Mirqaat)

Hadhrat ‘Umar (May Allah be well pleased with him) had sent an army under Sariya bin Zaneem to Persia.  When he reached the gates of the city of Nahavand and desired to lay to siege to it, a huge army came and there was very stiff fighting.  It was close that the Muslims would lose.  At this moment, Hadhrat ‘Umar (May Allah be well pleased with him) was in Madina giving the Friday Sermon in Masjid Nabawi.  Right in the middle of the sermon, he said in a loud voice:  O Sariya!  To the mountain!  O Sariya!  To the mountain!  The one who uses a wolf to shepherd goats has committed an excess.

The whole army heard this voice and said:  This is the voice of the Commander of the faithful.  Thus, they went in the shade of the mountain and after that they routed the other army.

Hadhrat ‘Ali (May Allah be well pleased with him) was also listening to the sermon of Hadhrat ‘Umar (May Allah be well pleased with him).  When people said:  What did the Commander of the faithful say?  Where are we and where is Sariya?  Hadhrat ‘Ali (May Allah be well pleased with him) said:  Don’t interfere in ‘Umar’s matters (May Allah be well pleased with him).  Whatever he takes up, he completes it.

Later on, when the soldiers from that army returned, they described this incident that they heard the voice of the Commander of the faithful and immediately went to the mountain.  This shows that the speech of ‘Umar (May Allah be well pleased with him) wasn’t futile.  In fact, this not only saved the Islamic army from destruction but got them a great victory as well.  Just think.  Nahavand and its surrounding were before Hadhrat ‘Umar (May Allah be well pleased with him) and nothing was hidden from him.  The way a commander judges the conditions of the battle and sends in his forces, that is what Hadhrat ‘Umar (May Allah be well pleased with him) did.  The unheard of thing was that he made his voice heard across a thousand miles.

If the Companions didn’t accept miracles they would’ve surely said:  The voice is of Hadhrat ‘Umar (May Allah be well pleased with him), but it isn’t possible that he knows of the conditions down here as knowledge of the unseen belongs only to Almighty Allah and to think otherwise is Shirk Fil ‘Ilm.  Then making one’s voice heard across that distance is Shirk Fit Tasarruf.  If we think that Hadhrat ‘Umar (May Allah be well pleased with him) is doing this, then our faith is in danger.  Thus, Satan is doing this to destroy us.  Thus, we should get as far as possible from the mountain to save ourselves from the deceit of Satan.  If they had had such “monotheistic thoughts,” all of them would have been destroyed.

In the era of ignorance, at a particular time in the year, a virgin would be decked up in al finery and would be thrown in the river bed of Nile.  When Egypt was conquered in the caliphate of Hadhrat ‘Umar (May Allah be well pleased with him), the natives of that land requested Hadhrat ‘Amr bin A’as (May Allah be well pleased with him), who was the governor there, to do the same.  He refused and the river remained dry for 3 months so much so that people decided to relocate out of the fear of drought.  Hadhrat ‘Amr bin A’as (May Allah be well pleased with him) informed Hadhrat ‘Umar (May Allah be well pleased with him) of this.  He wrote back:  You have done well by refusing to do it.  Islam destroys these kinds of customs.  Then Hadhrat ‘Umar (May Allah be well pleased with him) wrote a letter to the river Nile, the substance of which was:  O Nile!  If you flow of your own accord, then don’t bother.  If you obey Almighty Allah, then we implore Him to let you flow.  Hadhrat ‘Umar (May Allah be well pleased with him) gave the order that this letter should be dropped into the Nile.  When the people saw the next morning, the water had risen to more than 16 hand-breadths.
