Some sayings of Hadhrat Khwaja Abul Hasan Khirqani

(May Allah shower His Mercy on him)

Once, Hadhrat Khwaja Abul Hasan Khirqani was sitting along with his disciples.  He asked the gathering:  What is the best of all?  They said:  O Shaykh!  Please tell us.  He said:  That heart which has the remembrance of Almighty Allah.

Somebody asked him:  Who is a Sufi?  The Khwaja said:  Outer appearances don’t make one a Sufi.  A Sufi is the one who is not there.  He also said:  A Sufi is the one who doesn’t need the sun in the day and doesn’t need the moon and stars in the night.

Somebody asked him:  What is Sidq (truthfulness)?  The Khwaja said:  Sidq is when the heart talks (meaning that one should say what is in the heart)?

Somebody asked him:  What is Ikhlaas (sincerity).  The Khwaja said:  Whatever you do for Allah is Ikhlaas and whatever you do for the populace, that is ostentation (Riya).

The Khwaja said:  Develop sorrow so that your eyes shed tears.  Almighty Allah loves the person who cries.

The Khwaja said:  The heir of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) is that person who follows the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) and not that person who simply blackens paper.

Hadhrat Shibli (May Allah shower His Mercy on him) once said:  I desire that I should have no desire.  The Khwaja said:  Even that is a desire.  My Self has been desiring cold water and sour Lassi for the last 40 years and I haven’t given them to it.

There are many scholars and worshippers in the world, but your time, i.e. your night should pass in the manner that Allah Most High likes and your day should pass in such a manner that Allah Most High likes.

Everybody offers Salaat and everybody fasts but a real man is that person whose angel on the left side (i.e. the angel who records bad deeds) has not been able to write anything since the last 40 years that would embarrass him (or her) before the Lord Almighty.

The person who departs from this world with the reputation of good should be such that if he stands on the edge of hell and anyone is sent to hell, that person should take him by the hand and enter him into paradise (i.e. intercede for him).

The angels fear the friends of Allah on 3 occasions.  One, the angel of death at the time of death, second the recording angels when they record his (or her) deeds and third, the questioning angels (Munkir & Nakeer) when they question that person in the grave.

Be in the company of Almighty Allah and not in the company of the creation as one mistake can take you away from Almighty Allah to the extent of 2 years’ worth of journey.

If you desire the (material) world, the world will dominate you and if you turn away from it, you will dominate it.

A dervish is a person who doesn’t lean towards either this world or the hereafter as both of them are related to the heart.

For 40 years, I never cooked anything for myself, but I did cook for my guests and I remained dependent on them.  The truth is that even if the whole world is placed before the guest, the rights of the guest are not fulfilled.

I heard a voice on behalf of Almighty Allah that if you come to Me sorrowful, I will gladden you.  If you come to Me needy and poor, I will make you rich and if you come to Me abandoning your self, I will make the wind and water obedient to you.

I could never learn the limits of 3 things, first the limits of the grandeur of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam), second the limits of the deception of the Self (Nafs) and third the limits of gnosis of the Lord Almighty.

Salaat and fasting are good and removing pride and jealousy from the heart is better.

The person who departs from this world without tasting the sweetness of the Word of Allah Most High is as if bereft of all good and comfort.

If a person fulfills one desire of the Self, hundreds of obstacles crop up in his (or her) path to Almighty Allah.

Being of the Lord’s for one moment is better than the deeds of dwellers of the heavens and the earth.

The love of Almighty Allah is not present in the heart of that person who is not affectionate on the creation.

There are many who walk on the earth but are dead and there are many who sleep in the earth but are alive.

It is acceptable to me that I depart from this world in debt and that creditor holds me to account on the Day of Judgment but it is not at all acceptable to me that someone asks of me and I refuse his need.

I have found security in solitude and safety in silence.

The scholars say that they are the heirs of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) although some customs of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) are found in us.  The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) also led a life of poverty and we also lead lives of poverty.

The religion is not endangered to that extent by Satan to the extent that it is endangered by a greedy scholar and by an ignorant ascetic.

The nourishment of the courageous is the friendship of Almighty Allah.
