Hadhrat Shah Sa’adullah – A great scholar and Sufi

(May Allah shower His Mercy on him)

Weekly lecture of Mufti Syed Ziauddin Naqshbandi at Masjid Abul Hasanaat

Naqshband-e-Deccan Hadhrat Shah Sa’adullah Naqshbandi Mujaddidi Qadri (May Allah shower His Mercy on him) was a great scholar and a great Sufi.  He was an Imam of the Ummah in both the normative and the spiritual sciences.  He is that great personality of Deccan through whom the Naqshbandi order of Tasawwuf was spread in Deccan.  He had such a great status in knowledge and gnosis that many great scholars and Sufis would also seek benefit from him.

He wasn’t famous only in Deccan, but his name had spread all over the world.  People would come from all over the country and all over the world to draw benefit from him.  People from Bukhara, Kabul, Afghanistan, etc. would come to him and give their pledge to him.

These are the words of Mufti Hafidh Syed Ziauddin Naqshbandi Qadri, Professor, Islamic Law, Jamia Nizamia, Founder-Director, Abul Hasanaat Islamic Research Center, in the weekly lecture at Masjid Abul Hasanaat, Jahanuma, which is held under the aegis of AHIRC.

The revered Mufti said that sainthood was apparent in Hadhrat Sa’adullah (May Allah shower His Mercy on him) since an early age.  He would be busy in acquiring knowledge and performing good deeds.  In one accident, he got a serious wound on his left leg.  His father took pains to get it treated but it was of no use.  Then Hadhrat Shah Sa’adullah (May Allah shower His Mercy on him) sought his fathers’ permission and started from his home for the sake of treatment.  In the course of his journey, he saw a Shaykh from Delhi in a dream who was telling him:  Son Sa’adullah!  Where are you going?  Your treatment is here, with us.

Hadhrat Shah Sa’adullah (May Allah shower His Mercy on him) immediately set out for Delhi.  There he started searching for the saints.  When he reached the door of Hadhrat Ghulam ‘Ali Shah Naqshbandi (May Allah shower His Mercy on him), his journey was over.  He was the one whom he had seen in the dream.

Hadhrat Shah Sa’adullah (May Allah shower His Mercy on him) gave his pledge to him and remained with him for 12 years.  He busied himself in worship and spiritual exercises, meditation and reflection and in remembrance of Allah Most High.

The revered Mufti said that when Hadhrat Shah Sa’adullah (May Allah shower His Mercy on him) performed his Hajj, he was honored with the sight of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) who told him:  Sa’adullah!  Go to Hind.  There a great number of people are going to be benefited through you.

In fulfillment of the Prophet’s orders, Hadhrat Sa’adullah (May Allah shower His Mercy on him) passed through Madras, Kurnool and reached Hyderabad, Deccan.  With his coming, the populace thronged to his doors and drew benefit from him.  At any given time at least 200 people would be present in his Khanqah and Hadhrat Sa’adullah (May Allah shower His Mercy on him) would bear their expenses of food, lodging and clothing.  Many times nobles and other affluent folk tried to present something to Hadhrat Sa’adullah (May Allah shower His Mercy on him), but he didn’t accept it anytime.

For the disciples, along with their spiritual training, Hadhrat Sa’adullah (May Allah shower His Mercy on him) had arranged for their education as well.

Hadhrat Sa’adullah (May Allah shower His Mercy on him) was seated on a really high station of piety.  He would do nothing against the Sunnah.  His patience and reliance on Allah was exemplary.  Day and night, he would be busy in the remembrance of Allah.  Apart from other engagements, he would daily read 15 Paras of the Holy Quran.

The revered Mufti said that Naqshband-e-Deccan Hadhrat Shah Sa’adullah (May Allah shower His Mercy on him) was a master of all sciences.  Whenever there would be a discussion of any topic, without even seeing the book, he would give such a scholarly interpretation that other scholars could not reach there even with the help of books.

Anybody who would enter his discipleship would become indifferent to the world and would busy himself (or herself) in preparation for the hereafter.  His caliph Hadhrat Miskeen Shah Sahab (May Allah shower His Mercy on him) said that when Hadhrat Shah Sa’adullah would cast his spiritual attention on the disciples, it would seem as if the blessings are coming out of his blessed heart like waves of an ocean.

Hadhrat Shah Sa’adullah (May Allah shower His Mercy on him) laid emphasis on purification of the heart and stresses that one should be an embodiment of good manners.  He instructed one and all to clear their hearts of jealousy, rancor, enmity and other such blameworthy attributes.  He passed away on 28th Jamaadi Ul Ula 1270 Hijri.

The session ended with Salaam and Dua.  Maulana Hafidh Syed Ahmed Ghouri, Teacher, Jamia Nizamia, led the proceedings.
