The name of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) in the Adhaan

The name of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) in the Adhaan

It is related in Mawahib Al Ladunniya:

Translation: The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said:  When Hadhrat Adam (May peace be upon him) descended in the Indian subcontinent, he was very anxious.  At that time, Jibreel (May peace be upon him) descended and said the Adhaan in which Allahu Akbar was repeated twice, Ashhadu Allaa Ilaaha twice, Ashhadu Anna Muhammadur Rasoolullah twice…..(the intent being that the anxiety should be dispelled because of the Adhaan).

Hadhrat ‘Ali (May Allah be well pleased with him) says that once the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) found me sad and sorrowful.  He told me:  O son of Abi Talib!  I find you gloomy.  Ask someone to say the Adhaan in your ear.  It is the cure for sorrow.  Hadhrat ‘Ali (May Allah be well pleased with him) says:  I used it and indeed it dispelled sorrow and gloom.  All the narrators of this Hadith, all of them said that they had all used it and found the same effect.

The reason is that when one remembers one’s beloved, then all the thoughts of anxiety, etc. are wiped away.  When a person has absolute love for someone and remembers the beloved, then the heart develops a connection with the beloved which dispels the thoughts of anxiety, etc.  The new feelings occupy the heart and the old ones are wiped out.  When this is the situation on remembering any beloved, then what to say about remembering the Beloved of the Lord of the Worlds!

Thus, the effect of removing one’s anxiety and sorrow has been placed in the mention and remembrance of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam).  I am sure that there must be many subtleties here which the people of learning know.  This much even I can say that this is an expression of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) being Mercy for all universe, that the moment His mention is made, mercy is expressed.

The majesty of Allah Most High demands that when this effect is in the mention of any beloved, then how can this effect not be there in the mention of the Beloved of the Lord of the Worlds?  The hearts are miraculously made to lose their anxiety and sorrow.

One point to be remembered here is that if this effect is not created in the heart of any insolent, hard-hearted person, this doesn’t mean that this effect is faltering, what it means is that there is no capability in that person, the way doctors s agree that if there is no capability in the organ, then even the medicine of the highest quality will have any effect.

If someone says that in this Hadith the whole Adhaan is mentioned, which has many other things, then how does it prove the effect of the blessed name of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam)?  The answer is that there are 3 things in Adhaan:  Mention of Almighty Allah, mention of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) and invitation to Salaat.

It is obvious that this Adhaan is not intended for inviting others to Salaat.  Otherwise, why would the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) ask Hadhrat ‘Ali (May Allah be well pleased with him) to ask someone to say the Adhaan in his ear?  The Prophet would have simply told him to listen to the regular Adhaan.

As regard to the mention of Allah Most High, there is no doubt that there are all kinds of benefits in the blessed name of Allah Most High.  Who can deny it?  However, He is the One who makes things effective and He is all powerful.  It is up to Him to express the effect of something at a particular point or to deny it.

Thus, when Prophet Adam (May peace be upon him) was cast into this world, whom could he have remembered and mentioned except Allah Most High.  In spite of it, the effects of the mention of the blessed name of Almighty Allah were not expressed – as the intent was something else.  When it was intended to dispel his anxiety and gloom, Jibreel (May peace be upon him) was sent to say the Adhaan – which had the blessed name of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) as well.

Just think, what Prophet Adam (May peace be upon him) must have thought at that time!…  When he was reminded of the name of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam), all the distinctions of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) must have passed before his eyes and he said:  O Allah!  Forgive me for the sake of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam)

This shows that the intent behind the whole Adhaan was the blessed name of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) whose effects were expressed, the way on the Day of Judgment the Adhaan of Hadhrat Bilal (May Allah be well pleased with him) would be only for the testification of the Prophethood of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam).  As is mentioned in Mawahib:

Translation:  The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said:  The Prophets will be gathered on their mounts.  I will be mounted on Buraq and Bilal will be on a she-camel of paradise.  He will give the Adhaan and give the true testification.  When he will say Ashhadu Anna Muhammadur Rasoolullah, then all the believers, of former and latter times, will testify to it.

It is obvious that on the Day of Judgment, there will neither be any invitation to Salaat nor testification of monotheism – as there even the disbelievers will become monotheists.  The intent of the whole Adhaan in both these circumstances is the same, which is the effect of the Adhaan to dispel anxiety and sorrow through the blessed name of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam).  The anxiety of Prophet Adam (May peace be upon him) was dispelled through this only.
