The women in the life of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam)

The women in the life of the Holy Prophet

(Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam)

The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) was the one who granted women their due rights.  Here, we present a series on the women in the life of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam).  The first part of this article ran here.  This is the second part.

The mothers of the believers

Hadhrat Khadija (May Allah be well pleased with her)

Her name is Khadija (May Allah be well pleased with her), her Kuniyah is Umm Hind and she is famously known as Tahira.

Her lineage is Khadija bint Khauleed bin Asad bin ‘Abdul ‘Uzza bin Qusay.  Qusay is also the forefather of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam).  Her mother is

She was born 15 years before the incident of Abraha and his elephants.  She was married twice before being married to the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam).

In the 7th year of Prophethood, the polytheists of Quraish boycotted the clan of Hashim and imprisoned them in the Gorge of Abi Talib.  Hadhrat Khadija (May Allah be well pleased with her) was also along with the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) in this ordeal.  She bore the tribulations of this imprisonment for 3 long years.  This ordeal ended in the 10th year of Prophethood.

However, Hadhrat Khadija (May Allah be well pleased with her) passed away in the same year on 11th Ramadhan.  She is buried in the blessed city of Makkah.

She first bore a son to the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) Hadhat Qasim (May Allah be well pleased with him), who passed away in infancy.  Then she bore Him Zainab, then ‘Abdullah (who also passed away in his infancy), then Ruqaiyya, then Umm Kulthoom and then Fatima Zahra (May Allah be well pleased with all of them).

Hadhrat Sauda bin Zama’a (May Allah be well pleased with her)

Her blessed name is Sauda (May Allah be well pleased with her) and is from the clan of A’amir bin Luwai.  Her mother is Samoos bint Qais who is from the clan of Najjar, the natives of Madina.

She was earlier married to Hadhrat Sakran bin ‘Amr (May Allah be well pleased with him).  She and her husband were one of those Muslims who had embraced Islam in the early days itself.  She had also emigrated to Abyssinia along with her husband.  After many years there, they returned to Madina and her husband Sakran (May Allah be well pleased with him) passed away.  Then the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) married her.

She also participated in the Farewell Hajj in 10 Hijri.  After the demise of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam), she spent the remaining years in her own house and never stepped out of it.  She passed away in 22 Hijri in the caliphate of Hadhrat ‘Umar (May Allah be well pleased with him).

She had a son from her earlier marriage, Hadhrat ‘Abdur Rahman (May Allah be well pleased with him) who was martyred in the era of Hadhrat ‘Umar.  She did not bear the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) any children.

Hadhrat ‘Aisha Siddiqua (May Allah be well pleased with her)

Her blessed name is ‘Aisha, her honorifics are Siddiqua, Humaira and her Kuniyah is Umm ‘Abdullah.  She was from the clan of Taim of Quraish.

Her lineage is:  ‘Aisha bint Abu Bakr bin Abi Quhafa bin A’amir bin ‘Amr bin Ka’ab bin Sa’ad bin Taim bin Murrah bin Ka’ab bin Luwai.

Her mother’s name is Umm Rooman bint A’amir (May Allah be well pleased with him).  She was born in the month of Shawwal 4 years after the declaration of Prophethood.  She was highly intelligent from her childhood itself.

She came into the marriage of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) in the 10th year of Prophethood when she was 6 years of age.  She came to live with the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) 3 years later.  She was the only wife of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) who had not been married earlier.  She had the honor of being in the company of the Prophet for 9 years.  The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) passed away when she was 18 years of age.

Hadhrat ‘Aisha (May Allah be well pleased with her) is a great scholar of the Ummah.  She relates a substantial number of Hadith from the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam).  A huge section of Companions and Hadith experts have related Hadith on her authority.

She passed away in Madina in 58 Hijri at the age of 67.  As per her instructions, she was buried in Jannatul Baq’ee in the night itself.  Hadhrat Abu Hurairah (May Allah be well pleased with him) led the Funeral Salaat.  An unprecedented number of people attended her Funeral Salaat.  The whole Islamic world went in sorrow after her demise.

She did not bear the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) any children.
