The rights of parents in light of the Hadith

The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said:  Treating parents kindly is better than Salaat, fasting, Haj and Jihad in the path of Allah Ta’ala.  The abode of the person who obeys Allah Ta’ala and his (or her) parents is in the highest stations of Jannah (A’ala ‘Iliyyeen)

He (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) also said: Allah Ta’ala and His angels curse the person who gives preference to his wife over his mother.  His Fardh, Sunnah and Nafl will not be accepted.

Some people saw Hadhrat Bayazeed Bustami (May Allah shower His mercy on him) in a dream after his passing away that he is flying in the gardens of Jannah and his tongue is busy in the Tasbeeh of Allah Ta’ala.  Somebody asked him: How did you get this status?  He replied: By treating the parents nicely and by being patient on their harsh treatment.

It is mentioned in a Hadith:  Jannah is under the feet of the mother and father is the gateway of Jannah.  For this reason, both of them are highly respectable for us.  We should consider their service a great privilege and gather our supplies for the Aakhirah (hereafter).

Hadhrat Muhaddith-e-Deccan (May Allah shower His mercy on him) had a disciple whose mother was bedridden and he and his family would serve her with all their heart.  When his mother passed away, he came to Hadhrat Muhaddith-e-Deccan (May Allah shower His mercy on him) and conveyed this news.  Hadhrat recited: Inna Lillahi Wa Ilaihi Raji’oon.  Then said: Son! More than the regret of your mother passing away, I regret that the virtues which were being recorded in the Naame A’amaal of your family through the service of your mother have stopped from today.

Allah Ta’ala says: After Us, your parents have the highest status and the right on you.  For this reason, we should treat our parents nicely and keep them happy.  If the father and mother or any one of them reach old age, then don’t even trouble them.  This is the time of their helplessness and need.  Treat them with respect.

It is given in the Hadith:  For the person who keeps his (or her) parents happy in the morning, 2 doors to Jannah are opened in the grave and for the person who displeases his (or her) parents, 2 doors to hell are opened in the grave.

It is also given:  The smell of Jannah comes from a distance of 500 years, but the person who disobeys parents and the person who break relations with the relatives, will not be able to smell it.

Hadhrat Owais Qarni (May Allah shower His mercy on him) could not pay his respects to the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) for his whole life.  The reason was his old parents.  About him, the Holy Prophet (Sallalla.hu alaihi wa sallam) said: Serving your parents is like serving me.  His not coming to me is his coming to me.
