The virtues of Hadhrat Umar bin Khattab (May Allah be well pleased with him)

The virtues of Hadhrat ‘Umar bin Khattab

(May Allah be well pleased with him)

It is narrated on the authority of Hadhrat Abu Hurairah (May Allah be well pleased with him) that the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said:  Indeed, in the nations before you, there were people who were divinely inspired (i.e. who received Ilhaam). If there is anyone (like that) in My Ummah, it is ‘Umar.  (Related in Sahih Bukhari)

[‘Allama Torpushti has said:  These words are not intended as a doubt because the Ummah of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) is the best of all.  If such people existed in the past nations, then there will be a greater number of them in this Ummah and they will be of a greater stature than them.  This manner of speech is intended as an emphasis.  It is not difficult for any intelligent person to understand that this is exaltation and emphasis.  It is as if a person says:  If I have any friend, it is so-and-so.  This does not intend negation of friends per se, but is to show that so-and-so is a perfect friend]

It is narrated on the authority of Hadhrat ‘Uqba bin A’amir (May Allah be well pleased with him) that the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said:  If there were any prophet after me, it would have been ‘Umar bin Khattab. (Related in Jame’ Tirmidhi)

It is narrated on the authority of Hadhrat ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar (May Allah be well pleased with them) that the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said:   Allah Most High has placed truth (Haqq) on the tongue and in the heart of ‘Umar.  (Related in Jame’ Tirmidhi)

It is related in the narration of Abu Dawood on the authority of Hadhrat Abu Dharr (May Allah be well pleased with him):  Allah Most High has placed truth (Haqq) on the tongue of ‘Umar.  (Related in Abu Dawood)

It is related on the authority of Hadhrat ‘Ali (May Allah be well pleased with him):  We do not consider it inconceivable that Sakinah speaks through the tongue of ‘Umar.  (Dalaail Un Nubuwwah)

[It is mentioned in Lama’aat that this means that the tongue of Hadhrat ‘Umar (May Allah be well pleased with him) says that which comforts people and the hearts are gratified… ]

It is narrated on the authority of Hadhrat ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar (May Allah be well pleased with them) that Hadhrat ‘Umar (May Allah be well pleased with him) said:  I concurred with my Lord in 3 things: About offering Salaat at the Station of Ibrahim (Maqam Al Ibrahim), about Hijab and about the prisoners of Badr.  (Universally accepted).

It is narrated on the authority of Hadhrat Sa’ad bin Abi Waqaas that Hadhrat ‘Umar (May Allah be well pleased with him) sought permission to enter the presence of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam).  A few women from the Quraish were present.  They were speaking to the Prophet and demanding an increase in their expenses.  They were conversing in loud voices. When Hadhrat ‘Umar (May Allah be well pleased with him) sought permission, they got up and receded behind a curtain.

When Hadhrat ‘Umar (May Allah be well pleased with him) entered, the Prophet was laughing.  ‘Umar said:  O Prophet of Allah!  May Allah keep you smiling.  The Prophet said:  I am astonished at these women who were with me.  When they heard your voice, they receded behind the curtain. Hadhrat ‘Umar (May Allah be well pleased with him) said:  O enemies of your own selves!  Do you fear me and don’t fear the Prophet of Allah (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam)?  the women replied:  Yes.  You are stern and strict.

The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said:  O son of Khattab, let them be!  By Him who holds My life in His Hands, Satan never meets you on a wide path. Instead, he goes off on another path other than the one which you are traversing.  (universally accepted).

It is narrated on the authority of Hadhrat Jabir (May Allah be well pleased with him) that the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said:  I entered paradise (either in the Ascension or by spiritual unveiling or in a dream) and saw the wife of Abu Talha.  I heard a noise and said: Who is it? It was said: This is Bilal.  I saw a palace and in its courtyard was a girl. I said: Whose is this? It was said: Of Umar bin Khattab. I desired to enter it to check it out, but I remembered your sensitiveness in these matters (and did not enter the palace).  ‘Umar said:  May my mother and father be sacrificed for you, O Prophet of Allah!  Would I be sensitive with You?  (Universally accepted).

It is narrated on the authority of Hadhrat Abu Sa’eed Khudri (May Allah be well pleased with him) that the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said: When I was sleeping, people were presented before Me and they had tunics (Qameez) on them.  Some had tunics which were up till their chests and some a bit further on them.  ‘Umar bin Khattab was presented to Me and he had a tunic which (was very long and) he was pulling at it.  The Companions asked:  O Prophet of Allah!  How do you interpret this dream?  The Prophet said:  Faith. (universally accepted)

[Imam Nawawi said that tunic is a metaphor for faith and the pulling at it shows that the accomplishments and customs initiated by Hadhrat ‘Umar would remain prevalent among the Muslims even after his passing away]

It is narrated on the authority of Hadhrat ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar (May Allah be well pleased with him): I heard the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) say: When I was sleeping (I dreamt that) a cup of milk was brought to me.  I drank from it to the point that I could see the satiety brimming through my fingernails.  Then I gave My leftover milk to ‘Umar bin Khattab.  The Companions asked: O Prophet of Allah!  How do you interpret this dream?  He answered:  Knowledge.
