The Holy Quran and the Hadith are the foundation of our faith

The Holy Quran and the Hadith are the foundation of our faith

Islam is a complete and comprehensive religion.  The Holy Quran and the Hadith are the foundation of this faith.  Allah Most High has sent the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) with the distinction that he conveys the commands of Allah Most High to the populace and with the will of Allah, he also has the right to permit and prohibit things.  Accepting all the commands of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) without feeling any resentment and assenting to each and every command of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) is highly necessary for every believer.

It is mentioned in Surah Nisa:

So, (O Beloved,) by your Lord, they cannot become true believers until they make you a judge in every dispute that arises amongst them, and thereafter they do not feel any resentment in their hearts against the judgment that you make, and submit (to your decision) gladly, with total submission.  Surah Nisa (4:65)

These are the words of Mufti Syed Ziauddin Naqshbandi, Professor, Islamic Law, Jamia Nizamia, Founder-Director, Abul Hasanaat Islamic Research Center, in the weekly lecture conducted under the aegis of AHIRC in Masjid Abul Hasanaat.

The revered Mufti said that what happens usually is that when something is as per our wishes and/or in our favor, then no one goes against that particular command.  When things are going against us and the ruling is not in our favor, then one may feel some resentment.  However, Allah Most High has forewarned us that the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) should be accepted with one’s mind and soul in such a manner that one should not even feel any straitening of the heart.  If that command is not accepted, then Allah Most High declares on oath that that person is not a believer.  The blessed tongue of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) is the very exposition of divine will.  No matter what the situation is, whatever the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) says is the will of Almighty Allah.

The revered Mufti quoted a Hadith from Sunan Abu Dawood that Hadhrat ‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr bin A’as (May Allah be well pleased with them) would write down the utterances of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam).  People told him:  You write down every utterance of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam), although sometimes he is angry and at other times, he is glad.  Ask the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) whether whatever he says in a state of anger or gladness should also be written down or not.  When Hadhrat ‘Abdullah (May Allah be well pleased with them) asked the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) about this, the Prophet gestured towards his blessed mouth and said:  By Him who holds my life in His hands!  Nothing except truth escapes this.

Belief in the words of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) is absolutely necessary.  Allah Most High has granted the Prophet not only power over the universe (Takween) but has also granted him absolute legal authority.  There are many prohibited things in Islam whose prohibition is not mentioned in the Holy Quran.  The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) declared them as prohibited using the legal authority granted to him by Allah Most High.  Thus, wearing gold is prohibited for the men of this Ummah.  Similarly prohibition for men of wearing silk is also not mentioned in the Holy Quran.  All these are established and proved only through the Hadith.

The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) not only has the right to permit or prohibit anything but can also grant any exception from the Shariah to anyone.  Thus, it is mentioned in Sahih Bukhari that the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) gave special permission to Hadhrat Abu Burdah (May Allah be well pleased with him) to sacrifice a 6-month-old goat although the rule is that sacrifice of a goat which less than a year old is not acceptable.  In the same way, in the Shariah the testimony of 2 honest witnesses is acceptable.  Using the right granted to him and him alone, the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) declared the testimony of Hadhrat Khuzaima (May Allah be well pleased with him) to be equal to the testimony of 2 honest witnesses.  The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said:  If Khuzaima testifies for or against someone, then his testimony (alone) is enough and no other testimony is needed.

After the demise of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam), when the Holy Quran was being gathered, it was decided that any verse of the Holy Quran will not be written in the standard edition being prepared unless and until 2 Companions do not present that particular verse in written form, which must have been written in the era of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) even though many Companions had memorized the complete Holy Quran.  Hadhrat Zaid bin Thabit (May Allah be well pleased with him) says:  I did not find 1 verse from Surah Ahzaab in written form although I had heard the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) recite it.  I found that no one had this particular verse except Hadhrat Khuzaima (May Allah be well pleased with him), about whom the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) had declared that this testimony is equal to the testimony of 2 witnesses.  Thus, this verse of the Holy Quran was included on the strength of his testimony.

The session ended with Salaam and Dua.  Maulana Hafidh Syed Bahauddin Zubair Naqshbandi, Jamia Nizamia, led the proceedings.
