Hadhrat Khadija (May Allah be well pleased with her) - A brief life sketch

By virtue of their relationship with the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam), the status of the Ummahatul Momineen (The mothers of the believers) is very high. Many verses of the Holy Quran have been revealed about them and many Hadith of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) also mention their excellence and distinctions. Allah Most High says in the Holy Quran:

O wives of the Messenger! You are not the like of any of the womenfolk. If you want to remain pious and Godfearing, then be not soft in your speech (whilst talking to men as and when required) lest someone whose heart is diseased (with hypocrisy) should feel inclined with desire. And (always) say words that are pure of any taint of doubt and flexibility. Surah Ahzaab (33:32)

Imam Razi (Dec. 606 Hijri) (May Allah shower His Mercy on him) writes in the exegesis of this verse:

Translation: The mothers of the believers enjoy that status, which other women don’t. They chaste ladies are the mothers of all believers and the wives of the Chief of the Prophets. (Tafseer Razi, Surah Ahzaab (33:32))

Hadhrat Khadijah (May Allah be well pleased with her)

She is the first wife of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam). She has a special status among all the wives of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam). She is the first among women to embrace Islam. After the declaration, when the fires of opposition were raging all over, she was the one who comforted and consoled the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam)

There are many Hadith, which describe the superiority and excellence of Hadhrat Khadija (May Allah be well pleased with her).

Imam Tabarani has quoted a Hadith on the authority of Hadhrat ‘Aisha Siddiqua (May Allah be well pleased with her) that the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) fed her a date from Paradise in this world.

It is given in Sahih Bukhari that Hadhrat Jibreel (May peace be upon him) came to the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) and said: Hadhrat Khadija (May Allah be well pleased with her) is coming with a utensil with food. When she comes, convey to her the “Salaam” of Allah Most High and mine as well. Also give her the glad tiding there is a palace of pearl in Paradise for her, in which there will be no noise and no difficulty. There is a Hadith in Zurqani:

Hadhrat Khadija, Hadhrat Fatima (May Allah be well pleased with them) Hadhrat Maryam and Hadhrat Asiya (May peace be upon them) are the most superior of all the women of Paradise. After her demise, the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) would mention her in a pleasant manner. Whenever the Prophet would slaughter a goat, he would definitely send a share from it to her friends as well. (Jame’ Tirmidhi, Vol. 4, Pg. No. 22)

She passed away in the 10th year of Prophethood and her blessed grave is in Jannatul Mu’alla in Makkah.

Hadhrat Khadija (May Allah be well pleased with her) as a supporter of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam)

It was 40th year of the earthly life of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam). Solitude had been made endearing to the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam). Three miles away from the Makkah, there is a mountain which is known “Jabal an Noor.” At the top of that mountain, there is a cave which is called “Hira”. The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) would go there with the intention to worship Almighty Allah and busy himself in remembrance of the Lord Almighty. He would take a small quantity of barley with him as food. When that would be finished, sometimes the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) himself would return to his house and sometimes, Hadhrat Khadija (May Allah be well pleased with her) would bring food to the cave.

As was usual, the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) was busy in remembrance of Almighty Allah and meditation when one day, Jibreel (May peace be upon him) came on the command of Allah and requested: Recite “Iqra.” The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said: I am not going to recite. The angel embraced him warmly and repeated his request. The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) repeated his answer. This happened thrice. Then the angel recited the first 5 verses of Surah ‘Alaq. The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) also recited them. With this divine revelation, there was a surge of divine radiance and effulgence and the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) had attained special proximity of Almighty Allah, because which his blessed body was shivering. The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) came back to his house and asked Hadhrat Khadija (May Allah be well pleased with her) to cover him with a coverlet. She did so. The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) described to her all that had happened and told her: I am worried about my Ummah. Hadhrat Khadija (May Allah be well pleased with her) replied: When you are there, there is no worry for them. By the Lord Almighty, He will keep your status elevated and will not stop His help.

You host guests, treating others nicely is your custom, you help the weak, you provide succor to the needy.

Then Hadhrat Khadija (May Allah be well pleased with her) went to her cousin brother Warqa bin Noufal who was a monotheist and narrated everything to him. He said: This is the same angel who comes to the Prophets on behalf of Almighty Allah. I wish I were strong enough at that time of declaration of Prophethood.

The mother of the children of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam)

All the children of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) were from Hadhrat Khadija (May Allah be well pleased with her) except Hadhrat Ibrahim (May Allah be well pleased with him) who was born from Hadhrat Mariah Qubtiya (May Allah be well pleased with her)

The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) has 3 sons and 4 daughters.

The sons:

1. Hadhrat Qasim (May Allah be well pleased with him)

2. Hadhrat ‘Abdullah (May Allah be well pleased with him)

3. Hadhrat Ibrahim (May Allah be well pleased with him)

The daughters:

2. Hadhrat Ruqayya (May Allah be well pleased with her)

3. Hadhrat Umme Kulsum (May Allah be well pleased with her)

4. Hadhrat Fatima (May Allah be well pleased with her)
