f:440 -    Proof for the gap of time between Sehri and Fajr
Country : India,
Name : Fareed
Question:     Assalamualaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuhu, please give the evidence about the gap between Sehri and Fajr.
Answer:     At the time of te pre-dawn meal (the Suhr), we should ask Allah Most High for His forgiveness.  Allah Most High describes the qualities of pious people:

And used to (get up and) seek forgiveness in the later part of the night.  Surah Dhaariyaat (51:18)

Also, there is a Hadith about the amount of time between the pre-dawn meal and Salaat ul Fajr in Jame’ Tirmidhi:

Translation: Hadhrat Anas Bin Malik narrates on the authority of Hadhrat Zaid bin Thabit (May Allah be well pleased with them), that he says: We had the pre-dawn meal with the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) and then got up for Salaat.  I asked: How much time in between.  He said: Equal to the time taken for reciting 50 verses of the Holy Quran.  (Jame’ Tirmidhi, Hadith No. 707)

For this reason, the Jurists have clarified that having the pre-dawn meal so late that the time for Fajr might start, is Undesirable (Makruh).

Nowadays, the pre-dawn meal should be finished as per the time given in the calendars, etc., as they are prepared by in light of the research of the scholars.

And Allah Most High knows best.
