f:772 -    Importance of Valima
Country : Dubai,
Name : Abdullah
Question:     What is the importance of Valima in light of the Shariah
............................................................................
Answer:     The feast given by the groom after Nikah (marriage) is called Valima.  It is the responsibility of the groom and through this thankfulness to Allah Most High is also expressed.

There is a Hadith in Sahih Muslim:

It is narrated on the authority of Hadhrat Anas (May Allah be well pleased with him) that the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) saw yellow color on the garments of Hadhrat 'Abdur Rahman bin ‘Auf.  He asked him:  What is this?  Hadhrat 'Abdur Rahman answered:  O Prophet of Allah (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam), I gave a lady gold and married her.  The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) told him:  May Allah bless you.  You must perform a Valima, even if it is with only 1 goat (i.e. with the meat of only 1 goat).  (Sahih Muslim, Hadith No. 3556)

In the same way, when the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) married Hadhrat Zainab (May Allah be well pleased with her), He (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) performed the Valima with 1 goat.  As mentioned in this Hadith:

Translation: It is narrated on the authority of Hadhrat Anas (May Allah be well pleased with him), he says that the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) did not perform a Valima such as Hadhrat Zainab’s for any of his wives.  He performed this Valima with one goat.  (Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No. 5168)

In the same way, the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) has emphasized that we should accept the invitation to Valima.  As given in this Hadith of Sahih Bukhari:

It is narrated on the authority of Hadhrat ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar (May Allah be well pleased with them) that the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said:  When any of you is invited to a Valima, he should definitely go there.  (Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No. 5173)

All these Hadith show that performing a Valima is a Sunnah which betters mutual relations.

And Allah Most High knows best.
