f:808 -    In which direction should we offer Salaat when traveling
Country : Hyderabad, India,
Name : Abdul Samad
Question:     What to do if we are traveling and don't know where the Qibla is to offer Salaat?
............................................................................
Answer:     If you don’t know the direction of the Qibla to offer Salaat, then try to find it out by using reliable means such as asking Muslims who live in that area.  If no such reliable people are available, then "Taharri" should be done.  This means that one should think and consider in which direction most likely the Qibla would be and then Salaat should be offered in that direction.

If even during the Salaat, one realizes that the Qibla is some other direction, one should immediately change the direction of the Salaat.  If there is a delay of the worth of even 1 Sajdah (the smallest article of Salaat), then the Salaat will be invalidated.  However, if after the Salaat one realizes that the Qibla is another direction, then it is not necessary to redo the Salaat.

At the same time, if Salaat is performed without "Taharri," then the Salaat is not valid, even though it may have been in the right direction.

And Allah knows best.
