f:1226 -    Which seafood is permissible?
Country : KSA,
Name : Muhammad Majid

Question:
In the markets of KSA, various kinds of seafood are sold, like lobsters, crabs, etc.  Is eating them permissible?  In seafood, what can we eat?

.....................................................................................................................................
Answer:
In the opinion of the Hanafi jurists, fish and locusts are permissible.  Apart from them, all other animals of the sea are impermissible.  In the opinion of the other Imams, other seafood are permissible.

Thus, in the opinion of the Shafa’ee jurists, all seafood is permissible.  With the Maliki jurists all seafood are permissible.  However, the sea pig (scotoplanes) is Undesirable (Makruh).  With the Hambali jurists, except the frogs all seafood is permissible.  However, except the fish, slaughtering all other animals is essential.  As given in Maus’ooa Fiqhiyya At’ima, 15, 16) and in Fatawa A’alamgiri, Vol. 5, Pg. No. 289.

And Allah Most High knows best.
