f:1236 -    Reference of a miracle of Hadhrat Umar (May Allah be well pleased with him)
Country : Kuwait,
Name : Kashif

Question:
I am from Kuwait and write Islamic articles for some Islamic forums.  Recently, someone quoted a Hadith and said that this Hadith is not only Dhaeef but wrong.  Please tell me whether the Hadith is Dhaeef or not.  The Hadith is the one in which Hadhrat 'Umar (May Allah be well pleased with him) called to Hadhrat Sariya (May Allah be well pleased with him), who was in Iraq, from Madina.

Answer:
The Hadith that you have asked about has been quoted by Imam Bayhaqui in Dalaail Un Nubuwwah, by Imam Suyuti in Jame’ Ul Ahadeeth, by Imam ‘Ali Muttaqi Al Hindi in Kanz Ul ‘Ummaal and by Imam Ibn Hajr ‘Asqalaani in Al Isaaba Fee Ma’arifatis Sahaaba.  May Allah shower His Mercy on all of them   Imam Ibn Hajr (May Allah shower His Mercy on him) has declared the chain of narration of this Hadith to be fairly authenticated (Hasan).  We present the words given in Kanz Ul ‘Ummaal:

Translation: It is narrated on the authority of Hadhrat ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar (May Allah be well pleased with them), he says:  Hadhrat 'Umar (May Allah be well pleased with him) sent an army and made Hadhrat Saariya (May Allah be well pleased with him) the commander of that army.  One day, in the middle of the sermon, Hadhrat 'Umar (May Allah be well pleased with him) called out:  O Sariya, to the mountain!  He repeated this thrice.

When a messenger came from the army, Hadhrat 'Umar (May Allah be well pleased with him) asked him about the conditions there.  The messenger said:  O Commander of the faithful!  We were fighting the enemy and were on the verge of being defeated.  Suddenly, we heard a voice say "O Saariya, to the mountain!"  We stood with our backs to the mountain and Allah Most High defeated the enemies.

Hadhrat 'Umar (May Allah be well pleased with him) was also told:  Indeed!  You were the one who gave that call.

This is mentioned in Dalaail Un Nubuwwah Lil Baihaqui, Hadith No. 2655; in Jame’ Ul Ahadeeth, Musnad 'Umar bin Khattab, Hadith No. 28657; Kanz Ul ‘Ummaal, Hadith No. 35788; Al Isaaba Fee Ma’arifatis Sahaabah Li Ibn Hajr ‘Asqalani, Al Qism Al Awwal.

And Allah Most High knows best.
