f:662 -    Water issuing forth from the fingers of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam)
Country : Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, India,
Name : Aslam Khan

Question:
A certain acquaintance who is very knowledgeable once told that at one point, the Sahabah ran out of water.  Then water came out of the fingers of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) and all the Sahabah used it.  Is there a Hadith like this?

.....................................................................................................................................
Answer:
Allah Most High has sent His Prophets with miracles and clear signs and the personality of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) is nothing but a miracle.  From His blessed body, the signs of the Power of Allah Most High are made manifest and innumerable signs of the Lord's power were revealed.

Thus, there are many Hadith in the various collections of Hadith, (like Sunan, Musnad, Majma, Musnad, etc.) a number of Hadith are recorded which clearly mention that streams of water issued forth from the fingers of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) and the thirst of the Companions who were present at that time was quenched.

Here only the Hadith of Sahih Bukhari is being related.

Translation:  It is narrated on the authority of Hadhrat 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud (May Allah be well pleased with him), he said:  We would consider miracles as blessings and you consider them a means to frighten with!  We were in a journey along with the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam).  Water had run scarce.  The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) ordered:  Bring some water.  The Companions brought a vessel with little water in it.  The Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) placed His blessed hands in it and said:  Come towards the water, which purifies, the water which has blessings.  The blessings are from Allah Most High.  Hadhrat 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud (May Allah be well pleased with him) says:  Water was issuing forth from between the fingers of the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) and when the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) would eat, we would hear the Tasbeeh (glorification of Allah by the food).  (Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No. 3579)

This miracle has been expressed many times, in journey and out of it.  Among the Companions who have narrated this are Hadhrat Anas, Hadhrat Jabir Bin Abdullah, Hadhrat Abu Sa'eed Khudri, Hadhrat 'Aisha Siddiqua, Hadhrat 'Abdullah bin 'Abbas (May Allah be well pleased with them) and many others.

There is a Hadith narrated on the authority of Hadhrat Anas (May Allah be well pleased with him) in Sahih Bukhari:

Translation:  Hadhrat Qatadah (May Allah be well pleased with him) says:  I asked Hadhrat Anas (May Allah be well pleased with him), what was your number.  He said:  300 or near to it.  (Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No. 3572)

There is a Hadith in Sahih Bukhari narrated on the authority of Hadhrat Jabir (May Allah be well pleased with him) as well.

Translation:  Water started issuing forth from His blessed fingers like streams welling up.  Hadhrat Jabir (May Allah be well pleased with him) says:  We all quenched our thirst and performed Wudhu.

The narrator of the Hadith, Hadhrat Salem (May Allah be well pleased with him) says:  I asked Hadhrat Jabir (May Allah be well pleased with him), how many were you?  He said:  It would have surely sufficed even if were a lakh, we were 1500.  (Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No. 4152)

The interpreter of Sahih Bukhari, Hadhrat Hafidh Ibn Hajar Asqalani (May Allah shower His mercy on him) writes in the interpretation of this Hadith, on the authority of Qazi Iyaz (May Allah shower His mercy on him):

Translation:  The miracle of water issuing from the blessed fingers has been narrated by many Successors (Tab'ieen) on the authority of the Companions with unbroken chains of narration and from them by the reliable and authoritative Hadith experts (Muhadditheen).  This miracle has been expressed at many places in the presence of a large number of Companions and its denial by anyone is not proven at all and this is among those miracles which are established beyond doubt.

And Allah Most High knows best.
