Salaat Ul Janazah

The Sunnah and Mustahab (commendable) method of Salaat Ul Janazah (Funeral Salaat) is that the body should be placed in the front and the Imam should stand before its chest.  Then the Imam should all make the intention (Niyyah) of Salaat Ul Janazah.  The Niyyah is:

I offer Salaat Ul Janazah with 4 Takbeer, which is Salaat for Allah Ta'ala and is a prayer for the deceased.  Those who follow (Muqtadi) should say: Under the leadership of the Imam.  The Imam should say: Along with the followers.

Then they should perform the Takbeer Tahrima (The opening Takbeer of Salaat), raise their hands to their ears and bind them just below their navel (like a normal Salaat) and recite the Sanaa:

Transliteration: Subhana Kallahumma Wa Bi Hamdika Wa ta Barakasmuka Wa Ta'ala Jadduka Wa Jalla Thanaauka Wa La Ilaha Ghairuk

Translation: O Allah! We describe your sublimity and praise you.  Your name is blessed.  You are the most great. Your praise is the most great.  There is none worthy of worship except you.

Then Takbeer (i.e. Allahu Akbar) should be said the second time, but this time, hands should not be raised (and neither should faces be raised towards the sky, as people do).

Then Durud should be recited.  Any Durud can be recited, but it is better that the Durud of Salaat, i.e. Durud Ibrahimi should be recited:

Transliteration: Allahumma Salle Ala Muhammadin Wa 'Ala Aaali Muhammadin Kama Sallaita 'Ala Ibrahima Wa 'Ala Aali Ibrahima Innaka Hameedum Majeed.  Allahumma Barik 'Ala Muhammadin Wa 'Ala Aali Muhammadin Kama Barakta 'Ala Aali Ibrahima Wa 'Ala Aali Ibrahima Innaka Hameedum Majeed.

Translation: O Allah, Give peace to Hadhrat Muhammad (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) and the family of Muhammad (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam), as you have brought peace to Hadhrat Ibrahim (Peace be upon him) and his family. Truly, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious.  Allah, bless Hadhrat Muhammad (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) and the family of Hadhrat Muhammad (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam), as you have blessed Hadhrat Ibrahim (Peace be upon him) and his family.  Truly, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious.

Then Takbeer should be said the third time.  Even this time, hands (and/or faces) should not be raised.  If the deceased is a major (as per the Shariah), then the following Dua should be recited:

Transliteration: Allahummagh Firli Hayyina Wa Mayyitina Wa Shahidina Wa Ghaibina Wa Sagheerina, Wa Kabeerina Wa Dhakarina Wa Unthana.  Allahumma Man Ahyaytahu Minnaa Fa Ahyayihee 'Alal Islam Wa Man Tawaffaitahu Minnaa Fatawaffahu 'Alal Iman.

Translation: O Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala)! Forgive the living among us and the deceased; and those who are present and those who are absent; the children among us and the elders; the males among us and the females.  O Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala)! Those from us whom you allow to live, make them live with Islam and those from us who give death, make them die with Iman.

For a minor or lunatic, the following Dua should be recited:

Transliteration: Allahummaj 'Alhu Lanaa Faratan Waj 'Alhu Lanaa Ajran Wa Dhukhran Waj 'Alhu Lanaa Shafi'an Wa Mushaffi'an

Translation: O Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala)! Make him our forerunner and make him reward for us and a treasure in the hereafter and make him an intercessor for him and the one whose intercession is accepted.
