f:192 -    Age of animals for Qurbani
Country : Hyderabad, India,
Name : Muhammad Umar
Question:     Small animals are also brought for selling during the Qurbani season.  The question is animals of what age should be slaughtered?  The way if the lamb is of 6 months, then it can be slaughtered, so can we slaughter goat, camel etc. also if it is of less age?

Answer:     About the age of the animal to be slaughtered, there is a Hadith in Sahih Muslim about this:

Translation:  It is narrated on the authority of Hadhrat Jabir (May Allah be well pleased with him), he said that the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said: Slaughter only a goat of 1 year, a cow of 2 years or a camel of 5 years.  If you are facing any difficulty, then you may slaughter a lamb of 6 months as well.
(Sahih Muslim, Hadith No: 1963)

In the light of this Hadith, the Jurists have said that the goat should be of 1 year, the cow should be of 2 years and the camel should be of 5 years.  Slaughtering an animal less than this age is not correct.  If a lamb of 6 months is so fat and plump that it looks like a goat of a year, then it may be slaughtered.  If the age of the animals is more than the said age, it is all the more better.  It is Afdhal (Excellent).  However, if the age is less than that age, their Qurbani is not correct.

As given in Fatawa A'alamgiri, Vol. 5, Pg No. 297.
