f:936 -    Etiquette of listening to the Friday Sermon
Country : Hyderabad, India,
Name : Abid
Question:     How should we behave while listening to the Khutba of Friday?
Answer:     It is better to follow the etiquette which the Shariah has ordained for listening to sermons (Khutba).  It leads to increase in reward of the act and its excellence as well.

Once the Imam goes up the pulpit for giving the Friday Sermon, then until both the sermons are over, it is impermissible to perform any Dhikr, glorify Allah and it is impermissible to offer Sunnah or supererogatory (Nafl) Salaat as well.

In this regard, the Holy Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said:

Translation: When the Imam starts for the pulpit, then no Salaat should be offered and no talk should be made.  (Bada‘i Us Sana‘i, Vol. 1, Pg. No. 595)

It is not obligatory to sit in a particular position while listening to the sermon.  It is permitted to sit cross-legged or parallel-legged as one may.  However, sitting parallel-legged as one sits while offering Salaat has been declared to be commendable (Mustahab).  As given in Fatawa A’alamgiri, Vol. 1, Pg. No. 148.

And Allah Most High knows best.
